Just a note regarding the cost for the Carte Grise when you transfer your car to French Registration.
It appears that there is not a fixed national cost- you pay according to the horsepower or puissance fiscale. I have done my cars in Saone et Loire and the cost is 40 euros per horse. I did the same with a friends' car in the Yonne this week and their cost is 35 Euros per horse. Does anyone know the cost in the Nievre and Cote D'Or?

Ok, this was what I was told by Maartje Schalk from Assurance Benoit in Beaune.
I have 3 vehicles insured through her with Axa. Now it's quite right that you do not have to reregister your car if the Sous Prefecture will accept your UK reg however, the insurance company insists that you reregister to French plates after 6 months to keep your insurance valid so it's a bit of a Catch22 situation. Government says ok but insurance says no way, not after 6 months. So there are many conflicting stories going round and its up to you what you decide on really. I have no idea who's trainset this one is.

Sorry to sound ignorant, but what is meant by "per horse"? Would I be right in saying that a 60 brake horse power car would attract a charge of 2400 Euros? My 1400cc Rover is only worth about 1000 Euros! Maybe there is a difference between bhp and horse power???
We are planning to register it in July.

Any idea what are costs of re-registering your French vehicle within Burgundy from 21 to 71 are?
Also if you have the new type plates, do you have to change them?

We went to the Prefecture in Charolles yesterday and they were very friendly and helpful. As we have the new style number plates already they just noted our change of address and returned our carte grise and there was no charge.
We just need to see if we have to change the little 21 number on the plate to 71 and if so how?

Today I received a letter with a pull-off sticker to put on my Carte Grise.
So if you have the new style registration there appears to be No charge to change address. No new Carte Grise and you keep you existing Number Plates. Mine still say Bourgogne 21 not Bourgogne 71 but that does not seem to matter.
