Kate,
Interested in your vet's view that Tick collars are preferable to the likes of Frontline. Our vet advised us that tick collars were not of any great use for our dog or cat- he was obviously a frontline shareholder!!!! Views seem to vary so I suppose you pays your money..........

Bit spooky after the original post as I have just seen a report on ticks and humans in the travel section of the Daily Telegraph and it is also on their online site in the travel section.

It is an article on TBE or Tick Born Encephalitis. Very harmful to humans and apparently on the increase greatly in central Europe.

As it happens there is an article in the travel part of todays Telegraph. Seems Austria is suffering as well, luckily we didn't qualify for the football!!

Hi everyone,

The brand name of the tick collar is Scalibor - it works for 6 months and is waterproof, works against ticks and sand flies
see this website
http://www.intervet.co.uk/products_public/scalibor_collar/010_overview.asp

I buy it in the Netherlands from the vet - costs about 16 euro so it should be available in France I would imagine.
