Has anyone had any experience of Free.fr for internet/telephone access? I'd appreciate any opinions on the subject.

I use Free.fr for internet. I pay 14.99 per month for 50 hours access on dial up. I find this is enough for me as I am not a heavy user of the internet. Have never had a problem with service.

The Internet system has a number of choices from ADSL(broadband) to dial up and it is purely a personal choice for yourself and if your area has ADSL.
On the telephone side of things, if you are a non-resident or with a second home, it is worth looking at having the phone suspended when you are not at the house. France telecom have an English Speaking number to facilitate this so that you only pay for the line when you are in residence.
You may also wish to look at the various alternative telecom providers-UK Telecom who advertise on our site being an example.

Thanks for responses - A little research "sur place" I think will solve the problem.

We have chosen not to suspend our phone line when we are back in UK, as it is more than likely you will have a problem with the house when you arrive in France. You cannot access the French utilities with a uk mobile.

We've been suspending and re-activating our telephone line for a couple of years now with no problems.

My only issue has been the amount of time on hold waiting to speak to someone to make the changes (which can be an issue at international rates). However they are very helpful once you are through. As far as I'm aware there is also freephone number to reach the English speaking helpline if you are in France - unfortunately I haven't been organised enough to sort out the switch off on my day of departure.

I just found out this week (quite by accident) that you can now activate/suspend your line on the France Telecom web site - which should make things simpler from now on
